The three primary types of intellectual property rights are patents, trademarks and copyrights.

It includes not only original literary pieces but also other forms of creative expression like music, videos, films etc. Under copyright law, the owner of the work gets a number of rights which include financial rights to income arising from the work and acceptance as sole owner of that work.

In contrast, trademarks accord the person who has registered it, the protection over certain symbols, words or marks which point to the creator or origin of products to thwart replication and thus infringement. They safeguard the trademark owners from being financially exploited by unscrupulous elements.

The third type of intellectual property right, known as patent, protects the rights of inventors in their innovative and useful invention. It gives them sole right of use and sale of their work for a particular period.

Some other, less commonly enforced intellectual property rights are also safeguarded by the law. Some examples of other types are traditional understanding cultivated by natives of a particular area that is distinctive only to that area; trade secrets that include company secrets, for instance, KFC\’s recipe; and positional indicators that are a variant of trademarks used for products arising from a particular part of the world, for example Champagne.

These three kinds of intellectual property are quite different from each other for the most part but also have a few commonalities. Any of these are fully admissible under the law and the rightful holder can take legal recourse to enforce his right and claim reparation for any violation.
